Following Jesus: Life from the Inside Out

John 6:48-71 New International Version. In these verses Jesus tells the people that  vs:48: ” I am the bread of life….vs 51:” I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” 52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat? ”53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.

This was a hard teaching and many disciples deserted Jesus. vs:66.From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

People had been following Jesus for different reasons. Some thought only about what Jesus could do for them. They saw many miracles and hoped that Jesus would do the same for them.  But following signs are never enough.

Great crowds followed Jesus because they followed the signs that He had performed by healing the sick. Next Jesus went up on a mountainside to speak to the crowd.

In John 6: 1-14 When Jesus saw the crowd he asked his disciples to feed the five thousand men and the women and children.  The disciples didn’t know what to do, but the disciple Andrew spoke up and told Jesus that there was a boy with 5 barley loaves and 2 small fish. Jesus told His disciples to have the people sit on the grass. He took the loaves and fish and gave thanks and had it distributed to the people to eat as much as they wanted.  12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.  Even after seeing this, some people still did not believe.

They wanted Jesus on their terms, to use for their agenda; for the food that He had provided to fill their emptiness.  He warned them vs:27 “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

Emptiness is still a problem that we face today. Social media shows people what others have or are doing and many people realize that they can’t compare and become depressed.

Unless you have what you need on the inside of you, you will always be hungry. But whoever comes to Jesus will be filled from the inside, and never be hungry or thirsty. Eternal life is inside you. Believe His Word; eat His Body and drink His Blood…this is taken up inside us and is very personal. Let Christ’s life become your life. He becomes the source of your life and is able to change every area of your life. To have this new life we must be willing to let go of our old life.  He came to be in us…to have His life inside us. We must be willing to give up our old life. If we want to live like Jesus, we need the life of Jesus as the source of our life.

Jesus wants unrestricted access to us. He is able to change us to be more like Him…to go into the world to change the world.
